VWS comes from a simple idea: a business website shouldn't need to be thrown away every few years because the person who built it disappeared, a license expired, or a pile of plugins finally stopped cooperating.
We build websites as systems—designed to look good, structured to be maintainable, and built so they can grow with the business behind them.
A lot happened between a kid discovering HTML and VWS as it exists today.
At around eight years old, Shane Vincelette started building pages in plain Notepad: straight HTML, embedded audio players and every fun trick the late-'90s web could offer. GeoCities and Angelfire followed, then FrontPage made it possible to get even more ambitious.
By about 15, Shane had launched an early online store and started taking on websites for family, friends and small businesses—including early work for VT Maille. Building pages stopped being just experimentation and became a way to solve real business problems.
At Community College of Vermont, Shane studied Computer Systems Management while focusing his interests on web design and web services. That systems background still shapes VWS: the server, database, DNS, performance and backend matter just as much as what appears in the browser.
Over the years, Shane and longtime collaborator Jeffrey operated servers and explored several versions of the web-design and hosting business model. The technology moved through HTML, CSS, PHP, WordPress, Java and Linux, while the work stayed focused primarily on small-business and professional websites.
VWS today isn't the beginning of the story. It's the latest version of it. After years of building, hosting, fixing and learning, Shane found himself enjoying the work again—and especially enjoying the opportunity to bring that experience back to local small businesses, mom-and-pop shops and brick-and-mortar businesses around Harford County.
In the late '90s, building a website by hand was simply how it was done. Today, fully hand-coded sites make the most sense for specialized and enterprise-scale applications. For most small businesses, a flexible CMS creates a better result for both development and the people who actually have to own the website afterward.
VWS uses WordPress because it can be shaped around the business—not because the business should have to shape itself around the software.
Experience isn't just knowing what to add. A lot of it is knowing what not to leave behind.
Your website should belong to your business—not be held hostage by an expired license, proprietary builder or somebody else's account.
The backend matters. VWS builds administration around the people who will actually use it instead of expecting them to become WordPress developers.
Plugins when they make sense. Custom code when they don't. No collecting software just because there is a plugin for everything.
A website isn't finished when it launches. Hosting, updates, certificates, backups and the occasional mystery failure are part of owning one.
Responsiveness and taking care of the client are more important than anything.
After hundreds of websites, migrations, repairs, server changes and updates, the biggest lesson wasn't about code. Clients need someone who answers them, understands the problem and actually cares whether it gets solved.
VWS is owner-operated by Shane Vincelette. The person discussing the problem with you is also the person digging into WordPress, writing the code, configuring the server or figuring out why the thing that “should work” absolutely does not.
That direct relationship is intentional. For a small business, being able to reach the person who actually understands the system can matter more than having a giant agency behind it.
VT Maille was among the early small-business sites Shane worked with as a teenager. Years later, it's still part of the VWS story—now rebuilt for the modern web with WordPress, WooCommerce and a completely new system behind it.
